REACHING THE NEXT STEPS                                                                        


The REACH pre-registration period was closed at the beginning of December 2008 after 2.6 million pre-registrations were made by industry. The amount was a surprise to everyone and 20 times bigger than the official preliminary estimate. However, managing pre-registration was only the first step towards REACH compliance for companies.


The next challenges chemical firms will be facing this year is the complex process of generating and collating data, which involves the registration of tens of thousands of chemical substances. Following through on exposure scenario generation, gathering data from supply chain, securing raw material supply, duty to communicate information on substances in articles, and communicating about registration timeframes and uses are among the next REACH issues that affect every manufacturer, importer and downstream user all over the world. It is said that the data-gathering and sharing phase will be more complex than had been anticipated.


New Year, new REACH challenges


REACHWAY’s primary aim is to minimize our customers’ workload and costs caused by REACH. We have a software tool – REACHWAY™ Dialog and REACH consulting services to offer. Examples of our continuously increasing customer base are introduced in this newsletter.


In 2008 we strengthened our standing as a world leading REACH communication expert organization, and began providing REACH knowhow to our customers in the form of consulting services. During the year CEO Eeva Punta was invited to several international conferences to speak about REACH communication, including among others HICCS conference in May in Finland and Chemspec Europe in June in Germany.


Implementation of REACH has turned out to be more challenging than assumed. Certain challenges have been solved in cooperation between the industry, authorities, associations and service providers. REACHWAY has actively participated in providing the best solutions for supply chain communication and data gathering in cooperation with authorities and industry.


The next years will reveal a clearer picture of the actual business challenges of REACH. High-level knowhow and expertise combined with cost effective IT-solutions will be the essential success factors.

REACHWAY™ DIALOG  – A READY-MADE APPLICATION FOR CEFIC´S SUPPLY CHAIN APPROACH   

REACHWAY participated in CEFIC’s REACH IT Workshops in December 2008 and January 2009. We were very happy to learn that CEFIC’s approach to supply chain communication is exactly the same to which the REACHWAY™ Dialog application is based on. The templates and feedback model of CEFIC is fully compatible with REACHWAY™ Dialog and CEFIC’s earlier templates are already incorporated into the system.


CEFIC will soon publish a newsletter on Exposure Scenario development and communication as well as functional design of supply chain communication IT tools. The guidance will among others explain the process for the ES related communication in the supply chain.


New Use Mapping feature released


The most important aim of REACHWAY is to facilitate our customers’ supply chain communication and REACH data management. Therefore we published the most extensive release of REACHWAY™ Dialog’s history in November. In addition to comprehensively improved usability new features include for example improved search functions to facilitate data management and possibility to acquire feedback from multiple customers at the same time via profiled templates. The most appreciated new feature is our new use mapping tool which makes it possible to collect use information very efficiently, the information which is the key to all next REACH steps.

Rautaruukki, one of the leading metal companies in Europe, has chosen REACHWAY™ Dialog as a communication platform to support them in the REACH supply chain communication challenges. Company, that supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and mechanical engineering industries, employs 15,000 people in 26 countries. In 2007 net sales of Rautaruukki totalled EUR 3.9 billion. The corporation uses the marketing name Ruukki.

REACHWAY consulting services conducts Uniferm to REACH success


Chemical importer Uniferm has utilized REACHWAY’s REACH consulting expertise in their REACH process. Uniferm supplies raw materials and additives for food, nutraceutical, feed and chemical industries.  REACHWAY has already prepared REACH project plan for Uniferm, attended to preregistrations, prepared safety data sheets and arranged REACH training for Uniferm personnel.

REACHWAY™ Dialog supports Kemira in REACH Communication


For Kemira, one of the world's largest pulp and paper chemicals manufacturers, REACH communication is no small matter.


There were several possible solutions available for the supply chain communication required by REACH, including one's own portal, multiple service providers and e-mail attachments. However, Kemira Oyj soon decided to go for REACHWAY™ Dialog.

REACHWAY has signed a partnership agreement with well-known REACH IT solution provider and integrator TRASYS.


TRASYS has been working in the field of REACH for 5 years and has a strong footprint in the chemical sector. TRASYS international team includes over 40 consultants specialized in IT services and solutions for REACH. They participated among others in development of REACH-IT and IUCLID 5 systems.

WHY SAAS FOR REACH?                                                                               


“Data security is REACHWAY’s core business element.”


REACHWAY’s software as a service (SaaS) model is a good fit for companies with many geographically dispersed software users or users who collaborate with each other or outsiders. It works well for companies that have no need or no resources for in-house application developers or experts. SaaS also provides benefits to companies burdened with heavy regulatory compliance requirements like REACH because centralizing IT management costs are also amortized among all users.


– The return on investment is justification alone to use a hosted solution. You don’t need to pay for the software, upgrade, implementation or hosting capacity, says REACHWAY’s Production Manager Juha Rautiainen.

According to Mr. Rautiainen it is almost impossible for traditional software to keep track with rapid evolution of REACH process.
